Care of the Elderly—(D.Oliver)
The Care of the Elderly Concept Paper was recently completed, outlining the group’s five year strategic plan. The group’s vision is “to be a nationally recognized academic centre of excellence, which demonstrates leadership and innovation in evidence based primary medical care of the elderly”. They are focusing on the postgraduate level and have created a framework for an academic teaching unit in long term care and are working to find ways to have students attend nursing homes. This will enable learners to have a degree of comfort with this kind of medicine by the time they graduate.
Details of the Long‐Term Care Rotation include:
- Preceptors = 7
- Nursing Homes = 5
- Residents Exposed (Jan 2007‐Oct 2007) = 75
- Number of Resident Half‐Days Worked in LTC = 300
- Percentage of residents who had never worked in a nursing before starting this rotation = 33%
- Average Rating of the Experience = 8/10 (very useful)
Without Prompting....50% of completed evaluations commented that MORE 1/2 days in LTC would be useful!
