Canada’s first ever Quality Book of Tools is a comprehensive set of primary care indicators for family practices. This web based tool is intended to help family doctors and other primary care providers to assess and improve their family practices.
The indicators have been systematically designed to identify the common elements of primary care performance. There are 8 Categories that align with the established aims of the Institute of Medicine and the Ontario Health Quality Council’s Reporting Framework. They are Patient-Centred; Equitable; Timely and Accessible; Safe; Effective Clinical Practice; Efficient; Integrated and Continuous; and Appropriate Practice Resources. Within the Categories are 70 Indicators which can be separated into 43 practice management and 27 clinical effectiveness indicators.
The book was developed, tested and refined in family practices in Ontario. “We reviewed the international quality indicators, asked experts for their feedback and developed this uniquely Canadian version to help family practices in Ontario be the best in the world”, commented Cheryl Levitt, family physician and Professor, Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University. “This web-based tool will help family doctors, nurse practitioners and other primary care providers work better as a team.” said Linda Hilts, family practice nurse and Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University.
